Renowned electrochemist Kyoung-Shin Choi has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences for her groundbreaking work in developing electrodes and catalysts for sustainable energy applications. Choi, who is a member of the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Department of Chemistry, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, "I received the announcement email out of the blue... I felt ecstatic and very grateful as this election was not possible without people who appreciated my science and worked hard to nominate me and promote my achievements."

Choi's research focuses on utilizing solar energy to produce fuels and chemicals, with a particular emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly production methods. Her work not only advances the understanding of photoelectrodes but also delves into converting plant waste into valuable resources through electrochemistry.

Moreover, Choi's recent endeavors extend to electrochemical water treatment and resource recovery, including developing systems to remove and recover phosphate from wastewater, a crucial step in environmental conservation. Reflecting on her achievements, Choi shared, "We work together to make what we do fun, exciting and rewarding."

The induction ceremony for the American Academy of Arts & Sciences will take place in September at the Academy’s headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Choi joins a select group of individuals recognized for their exceptional contributions to their respective fields, with the Academy founded in 1780 to honor outstanding achievement and leadership that benefits society.
