Madison, WI - In the latest update on the ongoing discussions surrounding the tent encampment on Library Mall, campus leaders engaged in a fourth conversation with student protest organizers earlier today. The meeting aimed to address the concerns and expectations of the organizers in an effort to find a resolution.
During the meeting, students proposed bringing a set of guidelines related to Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA) investments to the next meeting. However, campus officials did not make any commitments regarding the disclosure of investments or divestment, citing WFAA's status as a separate, independent non-profit organization.
Regarding certain speculations, it was clarified that there was no discussion about a ceasefire statement or cutting ties with Israeli institutions during the meeting. Additionally, campus leaders emphasized the importance of the UWPD's role in engaging with and ensuring the safety of the campus community, stating that removing UWPD from campus is not an option.
Campus leaders also expressed their support for students impacted by the events and offered resources to assist them. Furthermore, an agreement was reached to continue discussions without immediately clearing the encampment, as long as productive dialogue persists. However, UWPD will intervene in case of public safety concerns or emergencies to ensure the safety of the campus community.
In a show of commitment to ongoing dialogue, campus leaders agreed to schedule another meeting with the student protest leaders, demonstrating a willingness to address the issues at hand.
These developments mark the latest efforts in the ongoing dialogue between campus leaders and student organizers, as both parties work towards finding a constructive resolution to the situation on Library Mall.
